Water Hammer: Why Your Pipes Bang

Water hammer is the loud bang or knock you hear when water flow stops suddenly, usually as a tap or appliance valve shuts. If your plumbing thumps, bangs or knocks when you turn off a tap or when the washing machine finishes filling, you are almost certainly hearing water hammer. It is one of the most common noises homeowners across Devon ask us about, and while it often sounds far worse than it is, it is worth understanding what is going on behind the wall. Sometimes a bang is harmless. Sometimes it is a sign that something is working loose and quietly causing wear. This guide explains what water hammer actually is, why it happens, how it is usually fixed, and when the noise is worth investigating properly.
What is water hammer?
Water in your pipes is heavy and, once it is moving, it carries momentum. When a tap or valve closes quickly, that column of water is brought to a sudden halt. All the energy it was carrying has to go somewhere, so it rebounds as a pressure wave that travels back along the pipe. That wave is what you hear as a bang or a series of knocks. Plumbers and engineers sometimes call it hydraulic shock, which is a useful way to picture it: a small shockwave running through your plumbing every time the flow stops abruptly.
The effect is more noticeable in modern homes because quarter-turn taps, solenoid valves in appliances and lever mixers all shut off very fast. The quicker the flow stops, the sharper the surge. An old-fashioned tap that you wind closed gives the water time to slow down gently, which is why water hammer often appears after a new appliance or tap is fitted.
Why does it happen?
A bang on its own is not unusual. What turns the occasional knock into a persistent, rattling water hammer problem is usually a combination of a few things working together.
Fast-closing valves are the trigger. Washing machines, dishwashers and toilet fill valves shut off in a fraction of a second, and that is often when the loudest bangs happen. You may notice the noise as the cistern finishes refilling or the moment the machine moves between cycles.
High mains pressure makes everything worse. The harder the water is pushing through the pipe, the bigger the surge when it stops. Pressure varies a lot depending on where you live and how the local network is laid out, so two houses on the same street can behave quite differently. Many UK plumbers suggest household pressure sitting somewhere around two to three bar is comfortable, and pressure noticeably above that can make hammer more likely.
Loose pipework turns a pressure surge into an audible bang. When a pipe is not clipped securely, the surge makes it jolt and knock against a joist, a wall or a neighbouring pipe. In older properties, runs hidden under floorboards were often never clipped at all, so they have room to move every time the pressure changes. Trapped air in the system can also add to the knocking, as pockets of air get compressed and shift when the flow changes.

How is water hammer fixed?
The good news is that water hammer is usually straightforward to deal with once you know where it is coming from. The right fix depends on the cause, and often it is a combination of the steps below.
Secure any loose pipes
This is the first thing to check, because it is the most common cause of the actual noise and often the cheapest to put right. A pipe that is free to move will knock against whatever is nearest every time the pressure changes. Where pipes are accessible, in an airing cupboard, under a sink or along a visible run, additional pipe clips that hold them firmly in place can stop the rattling completely. Pipes hidden under floorboards or in stud walls are harder to reach, which is where a methodical trace of the noise pays off.
Fit a water hammer arrestor
An arrestor is a small device fitted onto the supply pipe near the tap or appliance causing the trouble. Inside is a sealed cushion of air or gas that stays separate from the water. When the valve slams shut, the surging water pushes into the arrestor and compresses that cushion, soaking up the energy that would otherwise bang through your pipework. Because the air is sealed away from the water, a proper arrestor does not become waterlogged over time, which is a common weakness of the old trick of leaving a capped, air-filled pipe behind a tap.
Check and reduce the pressure
If the whole house is affected rather than one tap, high incoming pressure may be the root of it. A pressure-reducing valve fitted on the mains supply, where the water first enters the property, brings the pressure down to a steadier level before it reaches your taps and appliances. This is often the most lasting solution where the surge itself is the problem, and it has the bonus of being gentler on every fitting in the house. When banging is worth investigating
A single, occasional knock is rarely cause for concern. What is worth paying attention to is noise that is new, getting worse, or appearing in a part of the house where you cannot see the pipe. Over time, repeated pressure surges can stress the joints, fittings and connections in your system. That constant working can loosen seals and, eventually, lead to weeping joints or a hidden leak, often in exactly the awkward spots where pipes were never properly secured.
It is the combination of symptoms that tells the real story. If banging appears alongside a drop in pressure, an unexplained rise in your water bill, the sound of running water when everything is off, or damp patches and staining, the noise may be pointing to something more than a loose clip. In those cases the priority is to find exactly where the water is going before any damage spreads. If you ever hear a bang together with a visible leak or sudden water escaping, turn off your mains stopcock straight away.
